The Michigan State Spartans are set to take on The University of North Carolina Tar Heels in the first-ever college basketball game aboard a United States Navy Aircraft Carrier – the USS Carl Vinson. Scheduled to take place on November, 11, 2011, Veterans Day, this unprecedented season opener will be televised on ESPN.
On the bench for the North Carolina Tar Heels will be strength and conditioning coach Jonas Sahratian. Working under head coach Roy Williams first at Kansas and now North Carolina, Sahratian has been a part of National Championship teams and he has trained future NBA draft picks for many years.
When talking to Sahratian prior to last season he said the following about the basketball program at UNC:
“I think that I am in a pretty good situation right now at North Carolina. We have a competitive program where athletes show up on campus with a purpose and a drive to be great. The coaching staff reflects those goals and it is a positive working environment.”
North Carolina opens the season as the top-ranked team in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls. “[We’re] hoping we can play well and pull off the win” Sahratian said.
The Carrier Classic can be seen Friday, November 11th, at 7 p.m. Eastern time on ESPN.
