Freshman point guard Kevin Kaspar (Istabul, Turkey) tallied 2 points, 1 assist, and 1 steal in 19 minutes last week in Western Kentucky’s exhibition win over Xavier (La.). Friday evening, Western Kentucky hosts Saint Joseph’s in the season opener for both teams and Kaspar’s first official NCAA Division I contest.
Western Kentucky was picked to finish third in the Sun Belt Conference East Division. In 2010-11, the team finished 8-8 in the league and lost to North Texas in the conference tournament semifinals.
WKU will welcome nine newcomers to the 2011-12 roster, including seven true freshmen. The seven freshmen are the most rookies a Hilltopper team has boasted since 1976-77. The freshmen class comes with plenty of recognition, as it includes two members of Rivals.com’s list of the top 150 high school seniors in the country in Derrick Gordon (105th) and George Fant (150th). Gordon is listed as a four-star recruit by the publication, Fant, Nigel Snipes and Vinny Zollo were deemed three-star recruits and Kevin Kaspar was named a two-star recruit by the service. -Courtesy of Wkusports.com
Kasper, a 6’0 guard, played his high school basketball at Findlay Prep in Nevada and has international experience as a member of the Turkish National team. On Thursday, November 17, WKU can be seen on ESPN3 in the first game of the Charleston Classic against Tulsa.
