Aggies set to defend title

Kelsey Assarian (Naples, Florida) is a senior at Texas A&M and she came off the bench in all 36 games for the Aggies last season. Assarian averaged 1.9 points and 2.1 rebounds and shot 52.9 percent from the field. In addition, she was an All-Academic First-Team Big 12 selection and was the recipient of the team’s Academic Award.

In Friday’s season opener, Assarian was kept quiet, finishing with 1 point, 1 rebound, and 1 steal. The #6 Aggies forced 28 turnovers in the 83-58 win.

Last year’s championship team will get its rings and unveil its banner Tuesday before a nationally televised game against No. 9 Louisville. The nonconference slate also includes road matchups with No. 17 Purdue (Dec. 4) and No. 4 Connecticut (Dec. 6), and a pair of Big 12 showdowns with top-ranked Baylor loom in February.

As a prep star, Assarian was a runner-up for the Flordida 5A player of the year award after winning a state title in her senior season.
