Kaspar, WKU drop season opener

In a rematch of a tip-off game from last season, Saint Joseph’s held on for a win against Western Kentucky, 72-61. Freshman Kevin Kaspar (Istanbul, Turkey) finished Friday’s game with 3 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds in his debut.

Kaspar nailed a three-pointer after the Hawks converted a three-point play to bring WKU within one at 37-36, but from there Saint Joseph’s went on a 13-3 run to open up the game once again.

Kaspar’s three-point field goal helped continue WKU’s streak of at least one three-pointer in 737 consecutive games dating back to March 15, 1987.

The early part of the season will provide experience to a young roster at Western Kentucky.

WKU has seven true freshman on its 2011-12 roster, which is the most rookies a Hilltopper squad has boasted since 1976-77. WKU welcomes nine newcomers to the 2011-12 roster and will be looking to replace 66.0 percent of its scoring and 64.8 percent of its rebounding from last year’s squad.
