Detroit St. John’s Takes 3rd at OYAA Nationals

The St. John’s (Southfield, MI) men’s basketball team took home another 3rd-place finish at the 2013 Pan Orthodox Tournament held March 15-17 in metro Detroit.

After dropping an opening night contest against Des Plaines, Illinois, the veteran Detroit squad reeled off consecutive 20-point victories to put themselves in position to win the loser’s bracket.

In the Consolation Finals, St. John’s defeated Sts. Constantine and Helen from Palos Hills, IL, 73-55. Ara Kaypekian led the way for St. John’s as they secured another top-3 finish (2012 semi-finalist, 2011 consolation champs, 2010 semi-finalist, 2009 consolation champs). Both Nick Laventis and Danny Dardarian chipped in with double-digits in the points column. Kaypekian was named to the All-Tournament team.

St. Simian (Windy City Serbs) from South Chicago took home the men’s championship with a victory over defending champions St. Lazarus-Igraci of Detroit.
